Article for this month: Choice and self-loving growth

Choice is not an option in life: the question is only whether your choices are made from fear, or in the interest of creating something genuinely better for yourself: a choice that is made in the interests of self-love.

But as everyone knows choosing to do something for the better is not as easy as it seems. Why?

The first reason is physiological. Your current brain patterns are set to maintain the status quo, even if a default response is not in your best interests. The brain itself must be exercised regularly to rewire how it will respond in situations where a limiting habit is in play.

Choice is not manifested through making a once-off decision. A choice to be kinder to the self or to give up anxiety or anger is exactly the same as the choice to write a novel or set up a business. It is daily, moment-by-moment, small decisions to think, feel and act in a given way that determine the direction of our lives.

These decisions have to be exercised with the power of the heart. You need to truly desire this change if your choice is to take root because it is the energy of desire that makes it possible to persist through difficulties until the brain has accepted the new direction.

But what if you do not have enough “desire” to change? Does that mean you cannot choose to grow? Of course not. Humanity's condition is based on free will. But to make choice easy you will start by clearing the reasons behind the lack of desire so that choices have the fuel of passion behind them.

There are three reasons for a lack of desire:

1. The choice for “something better” is not your own, but is a concept that has been determined for you by society, your family, your education, partner or friends. In this case, you start observing what small things in life really make your heart sing right now, and go for those. Desire will be rekindled

2. Even when you do connect with a heart's desire that desire can be contaminated by fears that snuff it out. You decide to relax more by taking a day off the business to go fishing. Immediately you worry about the custom you will lose. The anxiety causes you to give up the idea altogether - or you take the mobile with you: end of your day off, end of your choice for self-love. The fear here has stopped you thinking about how you can handle the downside of the choice in a constructive, grounded way. Clear the fears.

3. You've tried before and apparently failed. Cynicism and pain has taken the place of desire. This often occurs because you have tried change in the past by biting off more than you can chew. Going cold turkey on your old habits, or starting something new with a big bang, is usually doomed to failure. Let go of the belief that you will always repeat your mistakes! Start your next venture by being realistic and taking decisions in line with what you have learned about what you don't want.

Apart from clearing inner limitations, change actions need to be stress-free, easy and enjoyable. If a whole day off work will create anxiety, why not try half an hour walking the park at lunchtime with the voicemail on? The body and mind begin to enjoy the walk and soon you can't imagine not taking your short walk. Before long you might even relax enough to come up with the idea of having someone take your calls as you go on that fishing trip.

All routes to a new habit require self-discipline and a fair degree of awareness. If your are prepared to accept that fact, if you use visualizations to rewire the brain's anxieties, and you persist in those small, easy and enjoyable steps, change in the name of self love can be surprisingly comfortable.

The mental and emotional energies of November through December can bring pleasure, relaxation and rejuvenation for those who choose to immerse themselves in these experiences.

Mentally the energy will bring clarity. It is a cleansing time. You have the opportunity to see the ground you stand upon clearly and make choices based on where you now need to step. Truthful observation of the whole self is a valuable skill to be utilized during this period.

Emotionally the energy is supportive and buoyant. Your choice to disentangle and send love will be felt by those you choose to support, and it is an important activity for conscious individuals making choices about the kind of life they want to manifest.

In bodily terms, November is a good month for rest, relaxation and holidays. Activities that support the body either through movement or rest will help you to absorb the love that is abundantly available. It is a bright time.

You will need to remember that perception is a choice. Look at the choices you are making in perceiving the world around. Are you allowing yourself to sit in misery, fear and entanglement? Or are you accepting the energies of love, the rest and recreation that are available to all, not only those with wealth or status? Choose.
